it was a violent weekend for some college students from our area. three young people were shot in two separate shootings on college campuses. two of those students including a college basketball standout have died. good sunday, everyone. shots were fired near the grounds of frostburg state university overnight. a student from d.c. was injured and a student from waldorf, maryland, was killed. >> reporter: by all accounts he was a standup student and

athlete at thomas stone high school where he graduated just a couple of years ago. let's go to a picture of the victim. brandon carroll was shot in the stomach and killed this morning near frostburg state university where he was a sophomore and basketball player. police say it involved a dispute among students who did know each other. brandon lived in waldorf. we have video showing where he lived. no one was home at his house. his family did leave earlier presumably to go to frostburg. brandon graduated from thomas stone in 2008. we are told he was a standout basketball player and captain of the team. police did make an arrest, a 21-year-old student tyrone hall has been charged with murder. he is accused of shooting and wounding another student, a southwest d.c. resident. that student is expected to survive this attack. the university issued a statement today.

it says in part the entire frostburg state university community is terribly saddened and shocked by this incident. our thoughts and prayers with with his family and friends as well as ellis hartridge with hopes for his full recovery. the suspect in the case did appear in court. he was ordered held without bond. police were able to recover the 12 gauge shotgun allegedly used in this shooting. he was very much loved in this community, the victim in this case, a vigil is planned later tonight. >> darcy, thank you. another college student from our area was also killed last night. 18-year-old joshua mcmackell of front royal university was killed near texas southern university. he was hit in the back while

standing with a group of students. police are looking for the shooter. air travel continues to be chaotic tonight. the volcano in iceland continues to spew ash. the situation may improve tomorrow. the european union says air traffic could return to half its normal levels tomorrow of weather forecasts show the skies are clearing of volcanic ash. other countries plan to keep their air space closed until tuesday. one man who just described in israel described a journey that started in milan. out of desperation he rented a car. >> i drove from rome. i flew. and finally i took the last plane here. >> meanwhile the problems are costing the aviation industry $200 million flus a day.

thousands attending a conversation in d.c. are stranded here. the conversation of the american association of geographers attracted attendees from all over the world. now the challenge for many is getting back home. here is news 4's derek ward. >> reporter: the association of american geographers conference, if anybody knows where the volcano is, they would be here. the conference winds down, many are doing their best to rebook flights and change their itineraries. >> i was supposed to fry to dublin. i was able to rebook for friday. i'm not sure if flights with go friday as well. i'm in a lucky position of having been able to get in touch with the airline and rebook. many have not. >> so far we did not get any response. >> i have been working all the time. enjoy the city and see some of

there could be a rain delay for the crew of the space shuttle "discovery." nasa says florida's forecast is not looking good for tomorrow morning's landing. the astronauts may remain in orbit for another day or two. they have enough supplies to last until wednesday. the backup plan at edwards air force base in california is an option. charles schumer has been fighting carry-on bag fees on flights and it looks like his fight may be paying off. five major airlines have agreed not to charge, american, delta united and us airways say they are not going to do it. the issue began when spirit airlines announced a $45 carry on fee. schumer plans to meet with spirit later this week.

congress is expected to take up the d.c. voting rights bill. the house will consider a version of the bill that contains a controversial gun amendment added by the senate last year. essentially that amendment removes the city's ability to enact its own gun laws. the battle stalled the bill for more than a year. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton gave up the fight. she says the gun measure probably would have passed anyway. spontaneous applause from thousands at the funeral for poland's president and first lady. we are in for a chilly, chilly night. how cold will it get? for a price that starts low

call the verizon center for customers with disabilities we're following breaking news right now. d.c. police are investigating three shootings around 4:00 this afternoon. two men were found with gunshot wounds at o street and north capitol street. another man was found shot in northeast. all three victims were conscious. we don't have anymore information about their conditions. we don't know what prompted the shootings. meanwhile, it was an emotional day in poland. thousands of mourners turned out to pay their respects at a state funeral for the president and first lady of poland. they were among the 96 who died when their plane crashed in western russia.

brand style of polish nationalism. today poles we spoke to from the streets who came far and wide said they were united behind him. jim maceda. many world leaders including president obama were not able to make the funeral because of the ash from iceland's volcano made it impossible to fly. it was cool today and it is going to be cold tonight. how cold are we talking? >> near freezing in many areas. some folks may need to grab an extra blanket. areas west of d.c., frost advisories in effect and freeze warnings for virginia piedmont. sub freezing temperatures are a possibility. if you plants cover them or bring them inside.

skies clearing up. we saw a good amount of clouds but they are thinning out. that is a sign of the potential for the frost. clear skies at night and calm winds. the heat radiates up into the atmosphere. official high temperature today on the chilly side 59 degrees, well below average. how about the low, 41 at national airport. this has been the coldest morning since march 28th when we had a low of 38. if you think 41's cold, check out these numbers to the west. this is similar to what we will see tomorrow. 32, dulles, manassas 30, culpepper 34. this entire area potential to get near freezing or possibly below. that is why the freeze warnings are in effect for those locations. temperatures now starting to fall to the 50s. 51 in hagerstown.

mid 50s at national airport. the stubborn for area of low pressure continues to be situated over new england throwing back snow and rain showers into vermont and new hampshire. the clouds still a sign of all the cold air in place. some of the clouds didn't make it to the south. the cool air mass stays in place, the frost and freeze potential remains in the forecast through tomorrow morning. high pressure starting to build back in for monday and tuesday allowing more sunshine to develop. temperatures will soar to near average. this evening, through the 50s, partly cloudy, winds 15 miles an hour. in the overnight the winds go calm and the cold spots 32 degrees to 42 around the metro area. for your monday, mostly sunny skies, pleasant day, 60 to 65 for the high temperatures. a little bit of improvement

there. tomorrow night 7:05 first pitch nationals versus the rockies. it will become cool at night time. 60 degrees is the game-time temperature. we will check the seven-day forecast. the sun in full tuesday at 66. a disturbance tries to come in on wednesday. southern viewing area could see a scattered shower. we are at 68, 70 on thursday. clouds lingering and the next best chance to see widespread rain will hold off until next weekend, unfortunately, but at least this upcoming work week we are dry and temperatures are on an upward trend. thanks, buddy. coming up in sport, the caps have questions to answer even though they tied up the series. plus the nationals, well, they came back to reality today against the brewers.

all i can say is wow. karlsson first playoff goal. backstrom, game winner. caps win 6-5 in overtime. the series tied at one game a piece. here is bruce boudreau on the goal tending situation. >> i think we said before the series started that if we were to go anywhere in this we would probably have to use both goalies. whether varlie or theo plays monday, i think they are both going to play again. we have to keep them sharp. i didn't fault them. i think we came up with a lot of energy and anticipation. that is a deflating goal when you are coming out and excited about playing and the first shot goes in. and then the next shot they get goes in. that's why i made the change. but one thing about theo is he's

defense. he only plans to attend june's mandatory minicamp. shanahan used this minicamp to establish new rules, running on and off the field. disciplining players for double parking or parking in handicap spots at redskins park. that is discipline. shanahan is basically attempting to change any bad habits. in other words shanahan is laying down the law. >> what you have to do as a head football coach is you have to make people accountable. that's my job. it is their job to understand what it takes to have this organization be successful. and my job is to make sure everybody is accountable to each other. >> what he wants is he has a standard that has been set. he wants maximum effort. obviously, when we are put in a new system you are going to have mistakes, just making sure we have the right effort, right attitude about things.
